Value of Humans
Back in the days each person had more influence simply because there were fewer people in general and people died sooner and more often, thus everyone counted for something.
Nowadays however people are so many they are easily replaceable like single use utensils (plastic cups and such). Our institutions like democracy and human rights are there to counteract this devaluation of human life.
During times of old Swiss Confederation officials were elected for life but in practice served only around 4 years due to high mortality rates. Nowadays we limit Presidential terms for 4 years and no more than 2 terms total, yet the same faces keep ruling for decades without change.
Generations after generations grow into adults but could not take reigns as previous generation have not died out yet.
